Design your own Synagogue

Design your own Synagogue The examples shown might be slightly different to the versions you will make.

Design your own Synagogue Make a drawing of a synagogue by following the following information. (You may like to refer to the print out in front of you) 1) A synagogue is a place of worship and gathering. 2) It is usually rectangular in shape. 3) A rectangular cupboard is on the eastern side with curtains (Parochet) covering the cupboard 5) This cupboard is called the Ark of the Covenant and contains tube shaped scrolls of the Jewish law (Torah).

6) Above the Ark are two tablet shaped containers of the ten commandments. 7) In front of the Ark is the Ner Tamid (Eternal light) Pendent lamp. 8) Looking from the western side, to the right of the Ark is the Menorah. (A seven branched candlestick). 9) Below the Ark, in the middle of the rectangle is a raised platform (the Bimah), on top of which is a reading desk. It is usually rectangular in shape.

10) Looking again from the western side, to the left of the Ark is usually the Rabbi’s chair. 11) Men sit on the three sides of the Bimah, facing the Ark of the Covenant. 12) Women sit separately on the three sides of the gallery, looking down on the Ark. 13) Stained glass windows are usually found decorating the Synagogue.
