What God Says About Modesty

About covering our body “I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed;” Rev. 3:18 Figurative language Positive = Be covered Negative = Not exposed What the Bible Teaches About covering our body

No clothing at birth History of Clothing our Bodies Job 1:21 “...Naked came I out of my mother's womb,...” No clothing at birth

Not Ashamed Adam and Eve were naked In the Garden of Eden Gen. 2:25 “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”

They knew they were naked After They Sinned They knew they were naked Gen. 3:7 “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Ashamed Made Aprons

Was God Pleased With the aprons ? No “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Genesis 3:21

Difference between Nudity And Nakedness Nude = no clothing Naked = some clothing Adam & Eve - Fig Leaves = Aprons Gen.3:9 God asked “Where art thou?” Gen.3:10 “…I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked: and I hid myself.” Gen. 3:21 God made coats to “clothe them”.

Animal Skins to clothe Adam and Eve

How much should be Covered in Public ? “that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear” Revelation 3:18 Certain parts of our body are to be covered Appear = when we are seen in public An Apron was Not enough For Adam and Eve

“Coats” “Clothed” Coats = “kottoneth” Clothed = “labash” “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Gen.3:21 Coats = “kottoneth” “covered from shoulders to their knees” Clothed = “labash” “wrap around, put on a garment”

Coats Tunic Hebrew: KUTTONET – “a tunic...; generally with sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the ankles” Tunic

Fred H. Wright, Manners and Customs of Bible Lands, 91 says: “The Tunic (inappropriately translated ‘coat’) was a shirt which was worn next to the skin. It was made of leather, hair-cloth, wool, linen, or in modern times, usually of cotton. The simplest form of it was without sleeves and reached to the knees or sometimes to the ankles. The well-to-do wore it with sleeves and extending to the ankles. Women as well as men wore it. Although there was no doubt a difference in style and pattern in what was worn by the two.”

An Apron was not enough for Adam & Eve Genesis 3 V. 11 Naked (Relatively) Apron Tunic V. 21 Clothed & Modest V. 7 Naked (Nude) From the Shoulder to the knee

Ex. 28:42 “And you shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs.” Priest ascending the platform Cover your nakedness Linen trousers From the waist to the thighs

Clothing and Sanity People in their right mind will cover their body Luke 8:27 tells about a man who did not wear clothes He was possessed with demons Jesus cast out the demons Luke 8:35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.”

How Christians Should Dress 1.Wear clothing that pleases God “wool and flax given to cover her nakedness.” Hosea 2:9 Conceal, to be placed out of sight God’s will is that people wear clothes to cover their nakedness.

How Christians Should Dress 2.Wear clothing that is Modest “in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel,...” 1 Tim. 2:9 Decent or orderly What is Modest Apparel ?

Too Short Too Low Too Tight Too Thin Too Loose Too Wild Too ???? Modest Apparel is NOT… Too Short Too Low Too Tight Too Thin Too Loose Too Wild Too ????

How Christians Should Dress 3. Do Not Dress Like the People of the World They expose the shame of their nakedness We are different - we are the children of God. Romans 12:2 “Be not conformed to this world:” To fashion alike

How Christians Should Dress 4. Clothing Reveals our Character Gen. 38:15 - Tamar was judged to be a harlot Prov. 7:10 “the attire of an harlot” KJV “dressed as a prostitute” ESV Christians wear clothing that shows something about our character!

What is the Standard for our Clothing ? The Bible is our guidebook God Clothed Adam & Eve From shoulders to the knees Rev.3:18 shame of our nakedness should be covered
