What is Piracy? Text Definition: Piracy involves the illegal copying, use and distribution of digital intellectual property, such as software, music, and movies. Our Definition: The process of making and selling “bootleg” media, i.e. movies, tapes, CDs, etc.

Why this Matters? Companies that are producing the media are complaining that they are losing money. Piracy is so wide spread that it forces companies and government to enforce regulations on violators.

Anti-Piracy Organizations: RIAA- Recording Industry Association of America MPAA- Motion Picture Association of America

RIAA FACTS: Sued thousands involved with illegal MP3 file sharing Seven hundred sixty five illegal file sharing lawsuits Shutdown most P2P (Peer 2 Peer) file sharing services Instrumental and promoting anti-piracy legislation

MPAA FACTS: Filed hundred of lawsuits against P2P services, i.e. eDonkey, Direct Connect, and Bit Torrent. Not as active as RIAA.

Anti-Piracy Legislation ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement)- International effort to fight counterfeiting and piracy SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)- expanding existing criminal laws to include unauthorized streaming of copyrighted content, imposing a maximum penalty of five years in prison. PIPA (Protect IP Act)- gives copyright holders additional tools to STOP access to piracy websites, including international sites.
