Ratio and Proportion Miss Wood

L.I: To be able to investigate using ratio and proportion, understanding the difference between them. Success Criteria: I can explain the difference between ratio and proportion I can mathematically apply my knowledge of multiplication, division and common factors I can work systematically

Ratio Ratio compares part:part In 24 fish there are 6 gold and 18 black This is written as 6:18 Using the same ratio if there was 1 gold fish there would be 3 black. 1:3 It’s a bit like simplifying fractions!

Proportion Proportion compares part in relation to whole. How many fish are there in total? The proportion of gold fish out of this total is 6. 6 out of 24. 6/24 Simplify this! ¼ What is that as a percentage? As a decimal?

Being systematic 2 4 6 8 5 10 25 1 2 3 4 3 6 9 12

Who has the bigger hand? The person with the biggest hand is b. Person a – explain how to solve this. Person b then solve it. In a class of 24 pupils, 8 can swim. What is the ratio of those who can swim to those who cannot? Now person b explain how to solve this. Person a then solve it. 10 people asked liked butter, and 5 people did not. What is the proportion of people who did not like butter?
