Thank you (and you) Bob Detrick & Anne Meltzer Tolbachik: Sergey Gorshkov/Minden Pictures/Corbis Bob Detrick & Anne Meltzer IRIS staff (especially Andy Frassetto) Terry Plank & Jeff McGuire & the rest of the organizing committee

What does NSF want? This is a community effort – tell us what you want A scientific vision To understand what we cannot do now that an SZO would allow us to accomplish To know what is the generational advance To see science lead the way, let infrastructure follow Start with the What, not the How.

NSF Support GeoPRISMS EarthScope Petrology & Geochemistry Geophysics Ocean Sciences (OCE) & Earth Sciences (EAR) EarthScope Petrology & Geochemistry Geophysics Here in Boise: 7 NSF Program Directors 1 Division Director Tectonics Geomorphology & Land Use Dynamics Office of International Science & Engineering

Scales & Timelines Hard to talk about funding mechanisms when we don’t yet know what the SZO is. MREFC Major Research Equipment & Facilities Construction NSF Science Program e.g. EarthScope Science GeoPRISMS RCN Research Coordination Network Planning Grants Other?? require Division buy-in and GEO $$ months 1-5 years 10+ years

NSF Big Ideas NSF’s Ideas for Future Investment 1 Midscale Research (+ Infrastructure) a recognition that science - uses infrastructure that is diverse in space, cost, & time to build NSF 2050: The Integrative Foundational Fund intends to - encourage exploration at the frontiers and risk-taking in areas that don’t fit into any particular program ‘box’ - cross boundaries in innovative ways, fill recognized gaps 2

To sum up! Scientific questions should lead the way. Think now about the potential broader impacts of this endeavor. Show us real integration between disciplines. How will an SZO bring a transformational step forward? What can’t we do without it?
