Presentation transcript:

Forming Questions in Spanish QUESTION FORMATION IN SPANISH SET NOTES UP IN 2 COLUMN NOTE FORMAT

Is, Am, Are, Does, Do are ALL implied with the question. Subject + Verb + Topic Voice Goes up at the end Is, Am, Are, Does, Do are ALL implied with the question. ¿Tú estudias mucho? Are you studying a lot? Do you study a lot? ¿Nosotros vamos a la playa? = Are we going to the beach? Do we go to the beach? Intonation

¿Estudias tú mucho? OR ¿Estudias mucho tú? Verb + Subject + Topic (subject either goes after the verb or at the end of the question). Voice goes up at the end Most common way by native speakers. ¿Estudias tú mucho? OR ¿Estudias mucho tú? Are you studying a lot? Do you study a lot? ¿Vamos a la playa nosotros? OR ¿Vamos nosotros a la playa? Are we going to the beach? Do we go to the beach? Inversion

Tag Word Questions EX. José baila bien. = José dances well.  José baila bien, ¿no? = José dances well, doesn’t he? or isn’t it so? EX. Tenemos tarea esta noche, ¿verdad? = We have homework tonight, right? Or We have homework tonight, is that true?

Tag Word Questions These ending words are: ¿no? = isn’t it so? ¿verdad?= right?, true? Write a sentence or statement in Spanish. Replace the period with a comma. Insert ending word with question marks around it ( ¿ ?).

These types of questions are informative questions. Question Word Questions These types of questions are informative questions. Information must be given in order to answer the question. You may NOT answer with “yes or no”/ “sí or no.”

Formation When using an interrogative in Spanish (AKA. Question word), you ALWAYS use the Inversion formation. Therefore, Question Word + Verb + Subject + Topic The verb MUST be conjugated according to the subject (who/what you are asking about).

Examples ¿Con quién vas tú a la playa? = With whom are you going to the beach? ¿Por qué va a la playa Ignacio todos los días? = Why does Ignacio go to the beach every day? ¿Qué comen los chicos al restaurante? = What are the boys eating at the restaurant?

Answering Question Word Questions Revert the order of the verb and subject. Every answer should have the following construction: Subject + Verb + Topic. Be sure to conjugate the verb according to the subject given. Reference to Q & A chart in your binder for proper ways to answer.

If you do not have the Q & A Chart New Subject in Answer Yo Stays the same YO Nosotros/ Nosotras Subjects in Question Yo Tú Él/Ella/ singular noun UD. Nosotros/Nosotras Vosotros/ Vosotras Ellos/ Ellas/ plural noun UDS.

Question Words ALL question words have accents! ¿Quién? is Who ¿Qué? is What ¿Por qué? Why ¿Dónde? Where ¿Cuándo? When y ¿Cómo? How ¿Cuánto hay? How much is there? Question Words

¿Cuál? = Which? What? (used when you have a choice in the matter). ¿Adónde? = ONLY used with the verb IR ¿De dónde? = ONLY used with the verb SER Question Words

Question Word Questions The only questions that DO NOT invert are questions that begin with: ¿Quién? ¿Quiénes? ALWAYS use the 3rd person form of the verb. EX. ¿Quién va a la playa? = Who is going to the beach?

Forming Negatives Put “NO” before the first verb.
