Rules for responding Stay on topic Provide constructive feedback All posts should be school appropriate Respond in complete sentences No text type

Assignment Question #1 Answer question #1: How has Mattie’s character stayed the same from the beginning of the book to the end? Pick a passage that demonstrates how Mattie’s character has stayed the same throughout the novel. Quote the passage and include the page number where the text can be found.

Assignment Question #1 Example Text “Now what? I couldn’t care for Nell; I could barely care for myself.” “I had to find someone to care for her (Anderson p163).” Comment The text shows that Mattie still thinks of herself as helpless and needing to be taken care of.

Assignment Question #2 Answer question #2: How has Mattie’s character changed from the beginning of the book to the end? Pick a passage that demonstrates how Mattie’s character has changed throughout the novel. Quote the passage and include the page number where the text can be found.

Assignment Question #2 Example Text “ “I’m fine, I’m fine. Shh. Please don’t cry. Everything is better now. I’m home, you’re home. You don’t have to worry anymore.” I drew up a chair next to her, and she leaned against my shoulder. I cradled her head in my arms until her sobs quieted (Anderson 238).” Comments This is a role reversal for Mattie and her mother. Mattie is now strong, independent, and responsible; while her mother is frail and will need to depend on Mattie.

Assignment Questions #1 & #2 Now, choose a classmate’s answer and comment to show your thinking about how the quoted text demonstrates how Mattie’s character stayed the same or changed. Comment on at least one passage from question #1 and one passage from question #2 (more if time allows) .
