Big Picture PE and Sport Faculty Last lesson we identified and described the causes of poor posture. We also developed our knowledge of sports injuries which are related to poor posture. How many causes and sports injuries can you remember? This lesson we will be looking at the physical and psychological benefits of a warm up including the key components of a warm up

PE and Sport Faculty Title: Components and benefits of a warm up Friday, 14 September 2018 Title: Components and benefits of a warm up Lesson Outcomes: Identify the key components of a warm up Describe the physical and psychological benefits of a warm up Explain the physical and psychological benefits of a warm up and relate these benefits to the key components of a warm up Analyse past exam questions on this topic area and apply your knowledge and understanding

Extension: What activities should be included in a warm up? PE and Sport Faculty What is a warm up? A warm up is the way our body prepares itself for exercise and also helps to reduce the risk of injuries occurring Extension: What activities should be included in a warm up?

What are the key components of a warm up? PE and Sport Faculty What are the key components of a warm up? Pulse raiser Mobility Dynamic movements Stretching Skill rehearsal phase Extension: What types of activities could you include in each stage of the warm up?

Movements that involve a change of speed and direction PE and Sport Faculty These can be done whilst stood still (static) e.g. quadriceps stretch or whilst on the move (dynamic) e.g. ‘open and close the gate’ Light physical activity e.g. jogging, walking or swimming. Lasts around 5-10 mins Movements that involve a change of speed and direction Rehearsing common movement patterns and skills which will be used in the activity e.g. dribbling skills in football Exercises that take the joints through their full range of movement e.g. arm swings, hip circles Match up the correct description to the correct component of the warm up. Pulse raiser Mobility Dynamic movements Stretching Skill rehearsal phase

Physical benefits of a warm up PE and Sport Faculty Physical benefits of a warm up Information race: Around the room you will find information on the 7 physical benefits of a warm up. You must collect this information and make detailed notes on it in your exercise book. Ensure that these are detailed as you will need to be able to explain these in an exam question! Physical benefits are those which are linked to our body including our organs, muscles and joints. They are not the ones linked to our brain

Psychological benefits of a warm up PE and Sport Faculty Psychological benefits of a warm up Heighten or control arousal levels e.g. get in the zone or settle nerves Improve concentration / focus Increase motivation Opportunity for mental rehearsal Mental rehearsal is giving the athlete time to think about what they will be doing in the main activity e.g. a gymnast might think about how they need to perform their routine correctly after the warm up. They may use this time to think back to successful experiences of completing this routine and think about how they did this and what they need to do in order to complete it again successfully today. Task: Copy these into your exercise books. Think – pair – share: How does a warm up provide these psychological benefits?

Task: Use the worksheet to plan how you would answer this question. PE and Sport Faculty Michelle is a competent netball player but does not understand the importance of warming up before matches. Explain the benefits of warming up before starting physical activity (8 marks) Task: Use the worksheet to plan how you would answer this question.

PE and Sport Faculty Next lesson we will be looking at the key components of a cool down and the physical and psychological benefits of a cool down. Can anyone think of any of the components of a cool down or the benefits?
