If we were to change her age / gender, how would this affect the narrative and meaning within it / spectator’s investment in the story KQ - How are traditional female characters usually presented, especially focusing on the time period KQ – Does Ofelia represent a protagonist of the modern day? If so, how? Consider: How the film’s characters conform to 1940’s gender stereotyping and how they contradict them The gender gap at the time and how this is represented in the film The creatures are portrayed as essentially genderless but they are presented as masculine through their word and actions

CONSOLODATION Elements - In groups of five – choose 1 micro feature each in a key sequence, then write a paragraph or two just on that feature to form a whole group essay Using some stills, students to do an in depth analysis on each In pairs, discuss the articles – how do they conform to / reject your own ideas of the film? Using the cameras, in groups of 5 students shoot a rough version of a sequence from a different perspective i.e. from a different character’s perspective, to examine the cinematography in isolation
