The Ocean The days gone by Destiny Colon Period 5 Poetry Project

The Days Gone By By James Whitcomb Riley O the days gone by! O the days gone by! The apples in the orchard, and the pathway through the rye; The chirrup of the robin, and the whistle of the quail As he piped across the meadows sweet as any nightingale; When the bloom was on the clover, and the blue was in the sky, And my happy heart brimmed over in the days gone by. In the days gone by, when my naked feet were tripped By the honey-suckle’s tangles where the water-lilies dipped, And the ripples of the river lipped the moss along the brink Where the placid-eyed and lazy-footed cattle came to drink, And the tilting snipe stood fearless of the truant’s wayward cry And the splashing of the swimmer, in the days gone by. O the days gone by! O the days gone by! The music of the laughing lip, the luster of the eye; The childish faith in fairies, and Aladdin’s magic ring— The simple, soul-reposing, glad belief in everything,— When life was like a story, holding neither sob nor sigh, In the golden olden glory of the days gone by.

The Ocean By Nathaniel Hawthorne The Ocean has its silent caves, Deep, quiet, and alone; Though there be fury on the waves, Beneath them there is none. The awful spirits of the deep Hold their communion there; And there are those for whom we weep, The young, the bright, the fair. Calmly the wearied seamen rest Beneath their own blue sea. The ocean solitudes are blest, For there is purity. The earth has guilt, the earth has care, Unquiet are its graves; But peaceful sleep is ever there, Beneath the dark blue waves.

Biographical Information Nathanial Hawthorne was born and raised in New England. He attended “Bowden College”, and while he was in school that’s when he decided to begin writing. He also published a novel called “Ethan Brand” (1850). His style of poetry was to write about tales, ling fiction that contains romance and “psychological realism.” Extra Facts: Hawthorne chose to mainly write about American life. The speaker must have had experienced something negative which is why he chose to express the way he felt in this way. The speaker seems to have taken the experience and realization to heart and it left an imprint in his mind. He now can see the negativity that is out in the world much more clearer.
