Phonics and Reading Workshop For Parents of Little Acorns 2016-17 Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July 2016

The Importance of reading to your child Modelling Model a love of books and a love of being a reader…books/newspaper in the house, cook books etc Links between printed word and voice Reading from left to right Picture Books Support work in school Repetitive phrases Discussions about characters, plot etc Model sounds Key words which don’t have specific sounds

Reading with your child Picture books (without words)…talking about pictures increases your child’s vocabulary and story-telling (Level 0). Levels 1 – 5 tend to just have key words or easily decodable words. Aiming for Level 6 by the end of Year R. Children need to point to words initially for 1:1 correspondence. Every day (5 minutes)! Make it fun! Be caught reading! (In the car, at the breakfast table etc).
