Session Three Summary Recruiting: students recruit professors, faculty websites updated, current student profiles maintained, prospective graduate student weekend, social events, competitive funding packages, see outcomes/alumni surveys (jobs, average time in degree), courses info/structure, more transparent process Funding: insufficient TA, fellowships and scholarships (3 years not enough for a PhD), evaluate student pool, too many students (?), more flexibility, new endowments (local), new faculty mentoring on funding, keeping students on tracks (so funding is used more efficiently), College transparence on how $ comes back to SEFS, rewards to faculty favors postdocs (publications), stronger partnerships with community for internships and careers, SEFS partnering with other schools for entrepreneurial opportunities (startups), rejuvenate faculty efforts to fund students Diversity: only give fellowships to diverse students, environmental justice courses, inclusive environment, diversify faculty, support systems, diversity and other training, getting more diverse kids and communities involved in environmental issues, need faculty to take the lead on this Mentoring: progress/hitting benchmarks (and consequences), accountability on student and committee part, supportive culture, more administrative oversight, faculty attending PhD defenses, collective/community effort, define paths, taking advantage of resources, skillsets take grad interest to heart, help student define their own path, help to build thinking mind, formal committee, peer community and alumni, nested hierarchies in the lab, faculty mentorship training Administrative Support: lack of central resources/portal, mentoring program, staff and faculty forum, disconnect between faculty, staff and students – communication route needed (other then email), reimbursement delays Community: resurrect the Dead Elk Society, journal club(s), community projects, central meeting place Career Outcomes: Ideas: One credit course covering all of the above beyond graduate orientation seminar, students passing down institutional knowledge (student-to-student mentorship), communication, where the equipment is etc., listserve to ask about equipment maybe other questions
