En La Barberia no se Llora (No Crying Allowed in the Barber Shop) Pepón Osorio 1994 mixed media created in Puerto Rico Hartford, Connecticut

Pepón Osorio My Beating Heart -Pepón Osorio Lonely Soul -Pepón Osorio Pepón Osorio was born 1955 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He started with art at a young age. He grew to then graduate from Columbia University in 1985. He is known for his large scale installations. My Beating Heart -Pepón Osorio Lonely Soul -Pepón Osorio

Confronting Masculinities Limitations The scene of a barber shop is a recreation of Pepón’s first haircut in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He was crying and terrified when he arrived. He was scared of the clippers that the barber used. But, to contradict the crying and terrifying event, he uses masculine objects like barber chairs, car seats, sports paraphernalia, etc.

Gender Limitations and Stereotypes This work uses the background story of Pepón’s first haircut to show the difference in emotion of men and females. Once Pepón realized that men don’t cry, in most religions and ethnicities men are the stronger gender. On the spot Pepón had grown into a man and followed all stereotypes of a man.

Rebellious Silence, from the Woman of Allah Series Shirin Neshat 1994 Iran B&W RC Print and Ink

Shirin Neshat Shirin Neshat was born March 26, 1957. She is mainly known for film, video, and photography. After graduating she moved to New York. In 1990 she returned to Iran, and says that it was one of the most shocking experiences she has ever had. This experience led her to making the Women of Allah series. Her works focus mainly on contrast between Islam and the west, felinity and masculinity, public life and private life, and bridging the spaces between these subjects.

Effect of the Title This title is represented throughout most of the works in the Women of Allah series. The way that the gun in most cases is held not pointed to the camera is showing a passive rebellion.

Different Interpretations A person who has no clue what the situation is with the Iranian government would have no clue why there are guns, and no clue what the titles mean, and how they are related to the work and protests against the government.

Pisupo Lua Afe (Corned Beef 2000) Michael Tuffery 1994 New Zealand Flattened Cans Translates to Corned Beef 2000

Story This Bull is made of flattened and of corned beef. Corned beef is a very popular food in the Pacific Islands. Tuffery is using Corned Beef made into a bull to connect them in the ways of them being negative things to nature and people. Tuffery is trying to say that beef and dairy cattle can destroy an islands fragile ecosystem.
