Political Party Eras in American History
Party Eras: Historical periods in which the two major parties are relatively stable. Often one of the two parties is dominant.
Critical Election: An electoral “earthquake” where new issues and new coalitions emerge.
Party Realignment: The displacement of the majority party by the minority party, usually during a critical election. Sometimes this results in the break-up of one party and/or the formation of a new major party.
