Thelma’s Gypsy Girls Nadia Timbury

Synopsis. The overall outcome of this documentary is to try and fine two gypsy girls to working the fashion world, which is unusual for the girls to work as they are usually cleaning and taking care of their home. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/thelmas-gypsy-girls/4od

Production, Broadcast, Generic Elements, Type of Documentary. It was produced by Crow TV and it’s broadcast date was on Sunday 12th August on channel 4. There are a variety of different interviews with the staff, parents and the girls them selves. Viewers observe how the girls behave when they are being filmed. This could also be how they act in reality. This documentary has been narrated-> Voice of God. The audience trust his well spoken, trusted voice and it seems very powerful. Some camera shots has been filmed by using ‘the fly on the wall’ kind of shot.

Analysis. In the opening of the show there are high pitched bells which shows that the programme is aimed at the female gender. Next there is deep, fast non-diegetic music which makes the audience seem nervous and make them think it’s a serious documentary. There was CCTV footage of two girls attacking each other which is a fly on the wall shot. There are close up shots of what tasks the girls have to do. Mid-shots show facial expressions and also body language. Next a wide angled shot was used to show how many girls the staff have to control and teach. There are close up shots of the girls sketches to show what kind of dresses they want to make. Artificial lighting was used for in the building so viewers can see what they’re doing.

Analysis. The camera travels following the boss of the company. This shows how important she is to the company. Natural lighting was used for the shots outside to show the reality. The long shot show the boys outside one of the girls house boxing, this shows how they usually act as the camera started off hidden in the girl’s house. A close-up shot of the girl’s face was used so that viewers only concentrate on what she is saying and not on anything around her. The fly on the wall shot was used to show how well the young girl was at learning to drive a van. The camera was placed on the front of the van so we could see everything. There is a wide angled shot of the front of the museum to show the size of it. There is a girl who’s being taught how to tell the time and there is a close up of the work she’s doing and the different times on a piece of paper. A mid-shot was used while the boss was interviewing all the future employees. This is so that viewers can see the girls’ facial expressions and their body language. A fly on the wall shot was used as a complaint was being made about one of the taxi drivers. -> An extreme close up was then used of the computer screen focused on a Facebook status talking about how they are ‘pikeys’.
