The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1920 Director by Robert Wiene The film came out two years after the first world war ended. It represents the German war government as Cesare is like a soldier that was conditioned to kill The script was inspired by personal experiences of the war. It was a revolutionary film. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is often hailed as a masterpiece of German expressionism.  The films themes of evil, sanity vs insanity and control represent how the people of Germany felt during the war In the film, it appears to be Cesare sleeping in his box but the real Cesare was out and kidnapped Jane. This represents the rise of Hitler during the time period of the film and how he made people believe he wasn’t evil and he was doing good. This also represents the character of Dr. Caligari as people believed he was good The chiaroscuro lighting reflects the dark times, and death, of world war one
