Extreme close-ups Extreme close ups are used in the film industry as well as photography. The shot focuses on the detail in the close up and are usually very intimate. Medium shot This type of shot tends to be of the head down to the characters waist. Medium shots are used to represent a person as you would see them in the flesh. Medium-Long Shot A medium long shot includes everything from the knees to the head. This can also include a main part of the background. In a medium long shot, the background can be favoured over the characters however it also gives a good sense of surroundings making It easier to understand the characters position. Long Shot A long shot displays the entire object or human figure and usually intends to place it in some relation to its surroundings. These shots are seen as scene setting as well as establishing the shot. The detail will be little as these shots are used for a general idea of the film or photo’s landscape or setting. Very long Shot A very long shot is a view of the scene from far away to capture an overall idea of what a place may look like. Two Shot A two shot camera angle establishes the relationship between the two people/ characters The two shot is a natural way of introducing people as well as feeling more involved when the two characters are conversing. Over the shoulder shot This type of shot is taken from the perspective of the shoulder of another person to help establish the position of each person. It helps the audience get a feeling of looking at one person from the other persons point of view. It is common in film these shots are used when cutting between the dialogue of the two characters. High angle shot This cinematic shot is taken from a high angle pointing down onto the subject/s with the effect of the point of focus getting swallowed up. Low angle shot A low angle shot is used to, psychologically, make the subject/s appear strong and powerful. Tilted frame shot The tilted frame shot, also known as the Dutch angle is a cinematic techniques used in cinematography to convey psychological uneasiness or tension in the subject/s in the film.
