What is an anticipatory set? Anticipatory Set - An anticipatory set is an activity which prepares and motivates students for learning. Grabber –An important thing that anticipatory set does is to grab the students, not focused upon learning. They can also establish a readiness or anticipation for what is to follow.  For it to do so, it must pique their interest.   It should whet the class's appetite for the subject to be taught.

What is the purpose of anticipatory sets? To gauge the students' level of collective background knowledge of the subject to help inform your instruction. Briefly expose the students to the lesson's objectives and how you will get them to the end result. Tell the students briefly what the lesson will be about. The What? and Why? Activate the students' existing knowledge base

What are some questions I should ask myself as a teacher? How can I involve as many as students as possible, piquing their interests for the subject matter to come? How should I inform my students of the lesson's context and objective, in kid-friendly language? What do the students need to know before they can delve into the lesson plan itself and direct instruction?

Examples of Anticipatory sets…. Ask students to relate a personal experience related to the objective of the lesson. Ask students to list information from a previous lesson, asking students to react to a picture, or answer a question pertaining to the lesson. By having an activity related to what will be learned, it shifts their attention to the learning process.  KWL charts, short activities, games and songs……

ANTICIPATORY SET “Don’t bring in an elephant to teach the color Gray ANTICIPATORY SET “Don’t bring in an elephant to teach the color Gray!” Madeline Hunter The Set activity should be usually short, lasting roughly 3 to 5 minutes. Pre-assesses appropriate skills as necessary diagnosis Transfers relevant prior knowledge Provides focus (active involvement of learner) Provides an advance organizer for key ideas Informs students about the (WHAT) objectives and the (WHY) rationale of the lesson.

Development “I DO IT” Lecture, presentation, demonstration, Modeling. CFU- Check for understanding Provides the conceptual structure of information, involves learners actively after each chunk of information

Development Signals are signs that tells your students what your expect them to do.

Development Signals used for anticipatory set: Focus- directs student Verbal cues- alerts student how and when to respond Think Time- time to figure out a response Interval- time to ponder Hand Signal- Students respond now

Guided Practice ‘WE DO IT’ Students can gain mastery through practice under teacher’s guidance Provides activities that match objective Allows for congruence Allows the teacher to monitor students

Guided Practice Lets try to recall what the four elements are for the Anticipatory set?

Guided Practice Pre-assess Transfer Knowledge Provides Focus Provides an advance organizer

Guided Practice How long should the Anticipatory set be? What is the purpose of Anticipatory Set?

Guided Practice How long should the Anticipatory set be? 3-5 minutes What is the purpose of Anticipatory Set? Communicates learning goals and motivates students

“YOU DO IT” What are some of the signals used in Anticipatory Set? Independent Practice “YOU DO IT” What are some of the signals used in Anticipatory Set?

Independent Practice Signals for Anticipatory Set: Focus- directs student Verbal cues- alerts student how and when to respond Think Time- time to figure out a response Interval- time to ponder Hand Signal- Students respond now

Independent Practice What ideas can you come up with for your direct instruction anticipatory sets?

Closure Anticipatory Set is important Helps grab the student’s attention Pre-assess student’s skills and knowledge Provides focus Transfers prior knowledge Helps organize key components
