personification

WHAT IS PERSONIFICATION? A figure of speech in which inanimate objects or abstractions are provided with human qualties or are represented as possessing human forms. In other words: Giving something a human-like quality or ability to something that is not human. HELLO MY DEAR!

Two Types of Personification “One refers to the practice of giving actual personality to an abstraction. This practice has its origins in animism and ancient religion, and it is called “personification” by modern theorists of religion and anthropology.” “The other meaning of personification is the historical sense of prosopopoeia. This refers to the practice of giving a consciously fictional personality to an abstraction, impersonating it.This rhetorical practice requires a seperation between the literary pretense of a personality, and the actual state of affairs.”

Example "Wind yells while blowing" "Wind yells while blowing" is an example of personification because wind cannot yell. Only a living thing can yell.   Necklace is a friend "Necklace is a friend" is an example of personification because Necklace is a thing, and necklaces cannot be friends. Only living things can have friends.

SNOW Snow speaks to the people its falling above in the glooming sunlight. Its white sparkling voice echoes as it falls through the air. By Jake

SATIN DREAMS OF INDIA Satin dreams of India. Satin dreams of being made into a beautiful sari. A warm, Wonderful sari Worn on an Indian Princess. Swaying in the wind. Satin tell us to be soft and gentle like her. By Autumn

WHY USE PERSONIFICATION. Consider the vulgarity of objectification WHY USE PERSONIFICATION? Consider the vulgarity of objectification. Personification must be its opposite: imagining that even an ash tray is worried about second hand smoke is the very stepping beyond the present and into the fantastic and literary that poetry promises. Authors use personification to make stories/ poems more dramatic and interesting or to convey a certain mood. Personification also helps us to relate more to the object or idea that is being personified because it is easier for us to relate to something with human attributes.

PERSONIFICATION TODAY “Personification, with allegory, was the literary rage in the 18th century, but it goes against the modern grain and today is the feeblest of metaphorical devices.” “In present-day English,(personification) has taken on a new lease of life in the media, especially film and advertising, although literary critics like Northrop Frye( cited in Paxson 1994 ) might well think it is devalued…” “Linguistically, personification is marked by one or more of the following devices: 1-)potentiality for the referent to be adressed by you 2-)the assignment of the faculty of speech 3-)the assignment of a personal name 4-)co-occurence of personified NP with he/she.

The sun is smiling THERE ARE APPLE’ EYE, MOUTH,NOSE

WHERE IS PERCONIFICATION USED? The concept of personification is commonly used in poetry, where things are often described as having feelings. It is also widely used in fiction and children’s literature, though fiction is not likely to stay focused on the personified object for long. ! FOLLOW ME
