Leslie Elwood Erik Nelson Jacob East Joe Shields Brandon Bonner LV3 Capstone Project

Mission Statement Design, fabricate, and document two lightweight rocket airframes using the 2014 capstone team’s processes.

Project Schedule Task Date Purchase / Acquire material 2/19 Machine coupling rings 3/4 First CF pieces fully cured Layup 3 3/8 Fin frames machined Delayed Nose cone mandrel machined Airframe modules complete Fins complete Fin cans complete Nose cone complete Documentation complete

Pacific Coast Composites Spent weeks soliciting for donations Found PCC, based out of Lakewood Acquired approximately $15,000 worth of material Including Carbon Fiber, adhesives, and fiberglass

Machine Science Corporation Based out of Wilsonville Cutting edge machine shop took tour of facility donated materials, machining, and professional advice

SAVED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS! Project Budget Material Qty Product Est. Cost 6061 T6 Aluminum 4 ft x 8” round bar Coupling rings, nose cone mandrel ,Rail buttons? Donated by Material Sciences 5H Carbon Fiber, 3M AF30 Adhesive film, 3M Pretreatment, Fiber Glass 70 yd 17 yd 200 yd Nose cone, Fins, Airframe Donated by Pacific Coast Composites Bagging material, release film, breather, sealant tape, flash tape 50 yards each Est $700.00 Fiberlay offers 40% discount to PSU Est Total Apx $700.00 SAVED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!

Layup 1 - LU16-1 - Results Using 2014 process. Shrink tape cure. Significant circumferential wrinkling. Long axial wrinkling Impossible release from mandrel. Had to be destroyed to retrieve tooling Possible solution: use vacuum bagging technique.

Layup 2 - LU16-2 - Results Altered adhesive length to not overlap Changed mold release agent and added internal release film layer Used vacuum bagging. Released smoothly from layup tooling, no destruction. Still significant wrinkling, although axial and not spanning the length Veining indicates bagging problem ∴ Less excess bagging & use Al caul plate.

What’s Next? Consult with industry with advisors. LU16-3 using Al caul plate to distribute pressure from vacuum. (Happening NOW!) Retrieve fin frames and nose cone mandrel from MSci. Find resource for affordable adhesive film.
