Welcome to 12:13! Need to talk with your friend? Wait till after class! Need to use the bathroom? Ask one of the parent volunteers Need to borrow a pen? Loan the parent volunteers a shoe and they will loan you a pen! Today’s “Starting Point” Set-up Crew 8th Grade

Seize The Opportunity To Serve Your World! SOLDIERS’ ANGELS Seize The Opportunity To Serve Your World!

THE GOAL: “Adopt” three soldiers 6th Grade: Burton Martin 7th Grade: Maria Prater 8th Grade: Jeffrey Crouch

THE PLAN: Team up to encourage them with cards, letters and care packages Two cards/letters per week One package per month

THE SYSTEM: Students in each grade will take turns writing cards/letters. These will be collected in class each Sunday On the 2nd Sunday of each month each grade will bring items for a care package Letters and packages will be mailed from the church

THE LEADERSHIP: Every student in 12:13 is part of our “Special Forces” team One student in each grade will serve as “Squad Commander” -- Collecting notes/letters -- Reminding team members of their commitments -- Leading by example

THE REASON: Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed. (Romans 13:7)

Part 3: Led Astray By Worldly Wiseman Pilgrim’s Progress Part 3: Led Astray By Worldly Wiseman

Christian Meets Worldly Wiseman His concern Quickly get rid of your burden! His criticism Of Evangelist Of the path Of the Book Steps For My Path

Wiseman’s Advice An easier way Go to Mr. Legality! “For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction…” (Matt. 7:13) Go to Mr. Legality! Lives in the town of Morality Has a good name and reputation Is skilled in removing burdens First house past the hill

Christian’s Detour He turns out of the way He is scared of the hill His burden feels heavier He regrets following Wiseman’s advice

A Rebuke and a Promise What are you doing here, Christian? Like drinking water from the toilet You have begun to reject the counsel of the Most High “But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” (Hebrews 10:38) Christian’s cry Evangelist’s promise “…all sins will be forgiven the children of man” (Mark 3:28)

Three Reasons to Hate Worldly Wiseman He turned you aside from “the Way” “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14) He made the Cross offensive to you “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35) He placed you on the path to death “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse…” (Galatians 3:10)

The Lie of Legalism Steps For My Path Lie: Truth: If I do enough good things… Read my Bible Serve in church Obey my parents …I can earn my salvation Truth: “No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” (Romans 3:20) Steps For My Path Let me cheat you out of your salvation!

Christian’s Repentance Christian’s shame Expected death for being misled by human wisdom Christian’s plea May my sin be forgiven? Evangelist’s response You have committed two evils You have forsaken the Good Road You have walked in forbidden paths The man at the gate will receive you!

Back To The Hard Path “He walked like one who was constantly treading on forbidden ground and could by no means consider himself safe until he once again got onto the road that he left in order to follow Mr. Worldly Wiseman’s advice.”
