GIS in Water Resources (CIVE 853) Fall 2017 Introduction to ArcGIS Software Instructor: Dr. Ayse Kilic Civil Engineering and School of Natural Resources University of Nebraska
History of GIS Advent of computer in late 50’s, early 60’s—computerized mapping programs, but NOT “GIS”. No attribute data.
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) ESRI)founded in 1969—grew from research group at Harvard. Current vector-based (arcs/nodes) ArcGIS software an outgrowth of this research.

Summary GIS offers a structured information model for working with geospatial data that describe the “water environment” (watersheds, streams, lakes, land use, ….) Water resources also needs observations and modeling to describe “the water” (discharge, water quality, water level, precipitation) Geography “brings things together” through georeferencing on the earth’s surface Understanding geolocation on the earth and working with geospatial coordinate systems is fundamental to this field GIS has traditionally been used on the desktop but increasingly there is a transition to information sharing on the web
