Geography Portugal is situated on the West of Europe. It’s part of the Iberian Peninsula. In the East of Portugal is Spain and in the other side is the Atlantic Ocean.
Nature Most of Portugal was once covered by forests. But, everything changed, a lot of forests were burned. The farming and hunting reduced the quantity of wild animal living in Portugal. In Portugal and Spain, it has the Iberian lynx, that doesn’t exist in the rest of the world.
Culture Portuguese cities still retain their historic character and a lot of the old buildings remain intact. A popular Portuguese art of tile painting and glazing is called “azulejos”. For example, this type of art can be observed at the “Carmo” church.
Government Portugal is a democratic republic and has been a member of European Union since 1986. Portugal was ruled by a king until 1910 when a revolution led to the imposition of the Republic Constitution. The country became democratic in 1974. The country adopted the euro at 1999.
History Portugal is one of the oldest nations in world. In 1487-88 Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to go round Africa's Cape of Good Hope. In 1975, Portugal gave independence to Angola, Mozambique, and other colonies. The country includes the Azores and the Madeira Islands.
