WHOSE FORESTS? CLASS – 5 ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

Let’s go for a nature walk into the forest.

CAN THIS GROUP OF TREES BE CALLED AS A FOREST?

Forest It is a self sufficient system with natural resources like plants, animals, water, air etc. and a few people living in harmony with them.

Draw lines to show the web of relationship.

Location of Jharkhand in India

Adivasis of Jharkand. People living in forests from a long time are called Adivasis. They look after the forests. They take material from the forest only as much as they need. They don’t use up all the wealth.

Forest is our ‘collective bank’- not yours, not mine alone. If someone uses more, everyone else would suffer.

A small farm in a forest. Adivasis get their food from the forest.

An adivasi house in the forest. They collect material to make their shelters from the forest.

They collect material for livelihood - Bamboo for baskets, mats etc from forest

FOREST PRODUCTS

Things made from forests’ products

They collect medicinal herbs from the forests.

Whose forests are these? Thus adivasis, Collect, collect , collect …….. But do not destroy the natural wealth out of greed. They also protect the forests from being destroyed. Now the Question: Whose forests are these? Those who live there & protect them Or Those who come from outside & destroy them

As per the Right to forest act, 2007 People who have been living in the forests for at least 25 years, have a right over the forest land and what is grown on it. They should not be removed from the forest. The work of protecting the forest should be done by their Gram Sabha.

GIRL STARS PROJECT

Education helps us to understand how we are all linked to one another and to nature. It helps us to see our responsibilities and voice our rights.

Extraordinary tale of an ordinary girl who has changed her life by going to school.

An adivasi girl from Jharkand, she loved forest from her childhood An adivasi girl from Jharkand, she loved forest from her childhood. She would not take the direct road to school, but would choose the path through the forest.

She studied hard & got her B. A She studied hard & got her B.A. degree in Sanskrit after getting a scholarship. She was the first girl in her village to do this.

Suryamani takes children for nature walks so that they can learn how to save trees.

To learn to read the forest is as important as reading books To learn to read the forest is as important as reading books. Recognise trees, plants, animals and imitate birds.

She is the founder of 'Torang', a tribal rights and cultural center in Kotari Village, Ranchi district in Jharkhand.

She works to save the forest where she lives and preserve her tribal culture with her community.

She says people should not forget their Kuduk language, music and should enjoy wearing traditional clothes.

Suryamani Bhagat is an activist with 'Save the forests of Jharkhand movement‘. With the help of her childhood friend and now husband, Bijoy, she started to fight for the rights of her Kuduk community people.

With her family members.

She was honoured by many organisations and invited to other countries to share her experiences.

Celebrating her success, let us sing & dance. Also, promise to join our hands in saving forests.

A collective bank for adivasis. Let us preserve it.

Adivasis’ forests and also our forests.
