Thesis-Driven Paper A thesis-driven paper makes an arguable claim and defends it. Do not confuse a research paper with a report: you need to offer a thesis about your topic and then present evidence and analysis that provides support and explanation.

The good, the bad, the ugly Thesis Statements The good, the bad, the ugly

The Bad Too broad (and too obvious) The Russian Revolution sparked people to rebel against the government and create a new society.

The Bad Too specific The Russian Revolution caused the peasants in Moscow to change their thinking about what it meant to be Russian and ultimately became more unhappy.

The Good Specific and provable The injustice in Lenin’s life paralleled the conditions in Russia, fueling Lenin to lead the revolution that would change the face of Russian politics.

Things to avoid: Topics very hard to argue i.e. people’s attitudes changing, hypotheticals, etc. If you can plug in another topic into your thesis and it still makes sense, it’s too broad

Outlining General Rules and Reminders You will be writing a 3 level outline for your Africa Research Paper

Purpose The purpose of an outline is to structure the BODY of your paper. Do not outline your introduction or conclusion. Your research question and thesis statement must be at the TOP of your outline. Every part of your outline must connect back to your thesis statement.

General Outlining Format All outlines should have the thesis as the first component. Without the main thesis present, the rest of the outline has little meaning. Introductions and conclusions are not a part of a formal MLA outline You will only outline the BODY of the paper. A formal outline has complete sentences for the thesis statement and the topic sentences The other components of the outline should be complete pieces of information, but do not necessarily have to be in sentence structure.

The Format, a three-level outline *this is what you need to do* Research Question (written here) Thesis (written here) Title I. First Level (body thesis) A. Second Level (evidence) 1. Third Level (further evidence, context or connection of evidence to body thesis – ie: analysis) B. Second Level 1. Third Level 2. Third Level C. Second Level II. First Level A. Second Level Citations at 2nd and 3rd level as appropriate Every subordinate level must directly support the level above it.

Full Sentence Outlines At the Roman numeral level (I, II, III, IV, etc.) of your outline (level one), you will have a full sentence The Roman numeral levels of your outline are your body theses/topic sentences These may or may not correspond to the paragraphs of your paper You may have more paragraphs than Roman numerals this is because some body theses lend themselves to more than one paragraph of information

Full Sentence Outlines The only complete sentences you must have are your body theses/topic sentences and your thesis statement. Topic sentences should be general enough to address ALL the information in the paragraph. Your body theses must be an argument point. They also must have a DIRECT and CLEAR connection to your thesis. Remember you are outlining the ARGUMENT POINTS of your paper not necessarily the paragraphs of your paper. EACH ROMAN NUMERAL WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY EQUAL ONE PARAGRAPH.

A Two-Level Outline (sample) Marcella May Ms. Maners European Studies 1 March 2020 Evergreen versus Aloha Is Washington really the best place to live? The state of Washington is better than the state of Hawaii. I. Hawaii is called the Aloha State and while there is much to appreciate about the area, it is a difficult place to live. A. definition of Aloha (Smith 34) B. positive attributes (there should be actual evidence here in your outline, ditto for all capital letters below) C. difficulties II. Washington has so much to offer and the mild temperature is very welcoming to exploring and adventure. A. physical features B. weather III. The global location and proximity of Washington is much more convenient for traveling than Hawaii. A. travel by car B. air travel

Create your own outline… Now you need to write a Three-Level Outline for your Africa Essay!

Writing – Plagiarism What is academic dishonesty? Skyline Definition of Academic Dishonesty & Plagiarism…

Most common form of academic dishonesty

Turnitin.com This is a great tool for you and teachers Makes it easier to turn in assignments Allows you and the teacher to receive/give great feedback Awesome way to turn in assignments It also allows me to see what is copied and what is not…

Plagiarism Reminder Plagiarism is not just copying someone else work. It is also stealing their thoughts and ideas. We know if you are creating your own thoughts and ideas or if you are taking them from someone else. Ways to avoid plagiarism Don’t take other information without citing it in your essay. Don’t take ideas/thoughts without citing it. Make sure you are doing proper MLA citations in the essay and proper MLA paraphrasing in your essay.

Writing – Citations Direct Quote If you cite a direct quote you should have quotation marks around it, along with the authors last name and the page number This is only from a text with a single author. In the event that you are using a different source than a book with 1 author you may need to cite your source differently Purdue Owl will set you free

Writing – Citations Paraphrase If you cite an author and don’t want to use the entire quote you would want to paraphrase Why would you want to do this? It is too long You want to borrow their idea or thought You want to cite contextual information You want to use another author’s analysis you cannot have more than 3 consecutive words from the quote without a direct quote A paraphrase borrows someone else’s idea, but puts it into your own words The paraphrase should be followed with the correct in text citation

Writing – Citations Paraphrase Good paraphrase Improper paraphrase

Academic Voice-Word Usage All numbers under 10 are written out – one, not 1 Any history is written in the past tense Have you referred to historical people in correct manner First time talking about them using full name, then just last name on any reference after the first Do not use contractions and do not use first person Don’t, didn’t, etc… -- “I”, “me”, “my”, “our” or “we” Avoid speculations careful with words: would, could, should, may, might, probably… etc. Avoid generalizations careful with words: many, everybody, most, all, people, society… etc.
