Water What is the main source of water? - Precipitation Sources of food that contain high amounts of water – Cucumbers (96.7%), Celery (95.4%) and radishes (95.3%) The hydrological cycle – Water cycle (evaporation, cooling and condensation and becomes precipitation) What does water do for/to our bodies? – It regulates the body’s temperature, allows for the proper circulation of nutrients and is the body’s main transportation system

Proteins What is the main source of protein? – Dairy products Other sources of protein – Fish, seafood, nuts, pork, chicken, turkey, beans and pulses What does protein do for/to our bodies? – They build tissues, cells and muscles and make hormones

Carbs What is the main source of carbohydrates? -Chestnuts Other sources of carbs – Fresh fruit, fresh juice, whole grains What do carbs do for/to our bodies? – They provide our body with energy

Fats What is the main source of fat? – Good fat = Avocados and bad fats = beef, pork, lamb, high fat dairy foods, etc. Other sources of good fats – Whole eggs, dark chocolate (70% cocoa) and nuts Other sources of bad fats – Fried foods, baked goods, processed snack foods, etc, What do good fats do for/to our bodies? – They store energy, insulate us and protect our vital organs. They act as messengers, helping the proteins do their jobs What do bad fats do for/to our bodies – Trans fats and saturated fats can increase your level of cholesterol, increase risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes

Vitamins What is the main source of vitamins? – There are many vitamins and so the main source varies per vitamin. For example, the best source for Vitamin D is milk because it helps your bones, for Vitamin A it’s carrots because they help you see at night, for Vitamin C it’s oranges because they help your body heal if you get a cut, etc. Other sources of vitamins – As I just mentioned, there are many vitamins so the main source varies but some examples include whole grains (Vitamin B) because they help your body make energy, almonds (Vitamin E) because they are good for blood circulation, leafy greens (spinach, Brussels sprouts, etc. for Vitamin K) because they are good for working against blood coagulation (the process of how the bloods clogs), etc. What to vitamins do for/to our bodies? – Our bodies need vitamins to work properly and to help us grow the way we should. The two vitamins that exist are water and fat soluble vitamins. Water soluble vitamins are vitamins that travel right through our bloodstream and whatever isn’t used comes out when we urinate. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in fat tissues in our body and liver. They stay stored in our body until we need them and can stay stored for up to 6 months!

Minerals What is the main source of minerals? – Cashew nuts Other sources of minerals – Dairy products, different meats (chicken, lean meat), vegetables, bread, fish (tuna, salmon), etc. What do minerals do for/to our bodies? – They help our bodies with growth and development, build strong bones, transmit nerve impulses, make hormones and help maintain a normal heartbeat

Interactive activity What’s the best source of water in foods? What’s the best source of protein in foods? What’s the best source of carbs in foods? What’s the best source of good fats in foods? What’s the best source of Vitamin K in foods? What’s the best source of minerals in foods?

Conclusion Thank you for listening to our presentation. We hope you have a greater understanding of food constituents and their main sources and wish you good luck on your quiz 
