HazMat Decontamination Team Recruitment Emergency Management Program
Why do we need on-call decontamination teams here at BIDMC?
Tokyo, March 1995 Sarin gas attack on subway system
St. Luke’s International Hospital, Tokyo: 500 patients presenting in first hour 641 patients over the course of the first day Nearly 5000 patients self-presenting to hospitals throughout Tokyo For comparison: on an average day (24 hour period) the BIDMC Emergency Department sees 150 patients
Some lessons learned: Terrorism is real, and could likely involve chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear elements After an event, some victims will arrive via ambulance, but many will self-present Before receiving medical treatment, victims will need to be decontaminated As a hospital community, we will all be affected
BIDMC HazMat Teams Hospital community-wide volunteer concept, involving departments ranging from Maintenance to Research Will receive all necessary training - no skills or previous knowledge required
BIDMC HazMat Teams: Requirements Mandatory one hour response travel time to BIDMC Occupational Health screening Signed manager approval Completion of necessary training components On-call for one week per month Participation in a minimum of two drills per year Participation in a minimum of two practicals per year
