Implications of Global Communications

Learning Objective: By the end of this topic you should be able to: discuss the implications of being able to communicate from anywhere in the world using mobile technology.

Discuss the implications of being able to communicate from anywhere in the world using mobile technology. Hints: you need to be able to combine a number of sections from this part of the specification in order to answer questions that may be based on a particular theme. you will need to answer a question based on this topic in the context in which the question is asked. e.g, the question may be about how a child on holiday can use a mobile phone abroad. implications should be both positive and negative.

Things to consider: The specific scenario Available technologies ‘trigger tech.’ cellular, satellite, GPS, Internet …. email, IM, video conferencing, photo/video upload, … Features & uses of these technologies (within the scenario) Advantages of the technology/feature/use why use it for/rather than ….? Drawbacks of the technology/feature/use ‘trigger terms’ cost, availability/coverage, quality of communication …

G063 June 2014 Q14: Reporters can report news stories live as they happen which will increase the coverage that 24-7 News can potentially provide Reporters can travel to any geographical area, however remote, and be able to send news stories to the company Reporters in the field could access the company network remotely via a VPN to access company data so 24-7 News will need to provide the infrastructure 24-7 News and its reporters will need to decide upon which type of technology they will use for a given geographic location / environment and evaluate the relative coverage, speed, reliability, portability and cost factors 24-7 News and its reporters will have to consider how they carry and transmit potentially sensitive information
