Concept Level Project Plan Project Name Turbomachinery Flow Visualization Project Number P08453 Project Family Sustainable Technologies for the Global Marketplace Track Sustainable Products, Systems and Technologies Start Term 2007-2 planned academic quarter for MSD1 End Term 2007-3 planned academic quarter for MSD2 Faculty Guide Dr. Steven Day (ME) confirmed Faculty Consultant Dr. Ali Ogut (ME) My choice Dr. First Last (EE) Indicate whether this is your choice, or confirmed Primary Customer Dresser-Rand, confirmed

Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description The test system will consist of a centrifugal pump that sits within an automated and instrumented flow loop. The flow loop will have a controlled variable resistance and pump rotational speed, and will monitor the pressure rise and flow rate of the pump. The system will be controlled and monitored through a LabView based program and user interface. The apparatus and pump housing will be fabricated from optically clear materials to allow flow visualization within the pump, including dye injection experiments and particle based methods such as Laser Doppler Velocimetry and particle Image Velocimetry. The apparatus will be designed and built with a modular construction so that design variations of impellers, volutes, and housings may be easily exchanged. Key Business Goals Develop an experimental apparatus that can be used to expose students to fundamentals of turbo machinery. May be used in future sections turbo machinery and fluid mechanics coursed May be used as a basis for graduate student research Primary Market The primary market will be engineering students at RIT, along with RIT faculty Secondary Market The secondary market will be Dresser-Rand Stakeholders RIT engineering students RIT faculty Dresser-Rand High school students (future RIT students)

Phase 0: Planning Staffing Requirements Mechanical Engineers (4) The persons should have knowledge of Fluid Mechanics, Machine Design, Vibrations Analysis, Materials science, ANSYS,3D solid modeling, CAD,. Tasks will include but not limited to, sensor selection, reverse engineering, machining of parts, material selection, analysis of various components. Electrical Engineers (2) The persons should have knowledge of circuit design, data acquisition, LabView, signals processing. Tasks will include but not limited to , creating a Graphical User Interface(GUI), sensor selection, signal conditioning, hardware control. Industrial and Systems Engineers None Computer Engineers Business Majors
