Man Ray The versatile artist.

Background Basics He was most prevalent in the art world during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s Primarily participated in the movement of Dada and Surrealism He spent most of his career in Paris until World War II when he returned to the U.S.A. Best known as a painter and photographer

Dadaism A movement, but not a movement, of art, but not art, made by artists, but not artists.

Observatory Time, the Lovers (1934) A prime example of his work in Paris made. This captures the main sentiments of Dadaism and Surrealism in that it has no sentiment at all. Surrealism evolved from Dadaism.

The Effect of His Residences He had tried to bring the movement to New York, but famously said: “Dada cannot live in New York. All New York is dada, and will not tolerate a rival.” Man Ray left NYC for Paris fairly soon after the movement was founded.

In Paris He met many of his contemporaries who only encouraged and celebrated his surrealist art. He fell in love with Kiki who was his muse, lover, and model for most of the 1920s.

“Le Violon d’Ingres” 1924 His most famous photograph of Kiki.

The Revolutionary Photographer Most artists try to create paintings that looked like photographs, but Man Ray wanted his photographs to look like paintings. He forever changed the world of fashion photography. His photograph’s maintained his surrealist nature that his paintings portrayed. His photographs showed minimalism, chance, and absurdity.

“Unconcerned, but not indifferent.”
