CONDITIONAL CLAUSES IF CLAUSES

THE ZERO CONDITIONAL To express the situations that are always true We use the present simple in the both sentences (if clause, main clause) – If + present simple, present simple If it rains tomorrow, I take an umbrella. (we can change the position of the sentences: I take an umbrella if it rains.) You have to study hard if you want to have good marks.

THE FIRST CONDITIONAL To express a possible situation that can happen at present or in future. We use the present simple in the if clause and will in the main clause - If + present simple, will/won´t + infinitive If I see her, I will call you. If you don´t find the job, what will you do? I will be very happy if you come. If it rains, we won´t have a barbecue.

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL To express an unreal situation. We don´t expect to happen but there is a theoretical possibility that it happens. We use the past simple in the if clause and would in the main clause – if + past simple, would/wouln´t + infinitive If I won a lot of money, I would buy a big house for me and my parents. I would tell you if I knew the answer.

THE SECOND CONDITIONAL I would have a better job if I studied harder. If I knew it, I wouldn´t do it. I would go at the party If I had more free time. When we use verb „to be“ in the if clause, were is used in all persons (If I were, if he/she were). It is used for advice or warnings. If I were you, I wouldn´t do it. My brother would have a better job if he weren´t so lazy.

THE THIRD CONDITIONAL To express an impossible situation which happened in the past or did not happen. We use the the past perfect in the if clause and the would have in the main clause – if + had/hadn´t + past participle, would/wouldn´t have + past participle If I had won a lot of money, I would have bought a big house. (But I didn´t win anything) If he had seen her, he would have told her it. (But he didn´t see her)

Choose the best answer If I …A……. you, I wouldn´t do it. A) were B) had been C) would have been D) am If I had known her number, I ………C…… her. A) call B) called C) would have called D) had called She would have played volleyball if she ...C taller. A) were B)have been C) had been D) would be We ´ll miss the bus if we …B…….. A) hurried B) don´t hurry C) had hurried D) hurry

Complete the sentences I will prepare dinner if you buy some meat. (buy) You wouldn´t be tired if you slept more. (sleep) She wouldn´t have broken up with you if you hadn´t been unfaithful to her. (be unfaithful) If you told the truth, she wouldn´t be angry. (tell) If you had gone with us to th eparty, you would have met new friends. (meet) If I had a birthday party, I would invite you. (invite) If he hadn´t driven drunk he wouldn´t have had an accident. (have)

Finish the sentences on your own If I were you, We wouldn´t do it if She would have done it if If I had won a lot of money, I would tell you if If I had more time, I If he had known it, he If I would have had my own house I I would go with you if

Match column A with column B His wife would speak with him I wouldn´t have done it If we had had a map We wouldn´t be late If you listened to me I would help you I wouldn´t have broken my leg If I had spoken French If I had time. I would have gone to France. If you didn´t keep us. If I hadn´t fallen down the ladder. If he didn´t tell lies. We wouldn´t have got lost. If I had known it. You wouldn´t be late.

Match column A with column B - Solution His wife would speak with him if he didn´t tell lies. I wouldn´t have done it if I had known it. If we had had a map we wouldn´t have got lost. We wouldn´t be late if you didn´t keep us. If you listened to me you wouldn´t be late. I would help you if I had time. I wouldn´t have broken my leg if I hadn´t fallen down the ladder.
