Vasco Da Gama Portuguese Explorer 1460(?) - 1524

MAIN ACOMPLESHMENTS Vasco’s main accomplishment was finding a route from Europe to India that was entirely all by water. This trip took a year each way, but was the safest and most reliable route at that time. He was also the first to sail around the Cape Of Good Hope. EARLY LIFE Vasco da Gama was born into a noble family in Sines ,Portugal around 1460. He went to school in Evora and learned astronomy and navigation. He later served in the army. In 1492 a French crew looted a Portuguese ship with gold and sent it of to Portugal from Africa. Vasco was sent to seize all the French ships in Portugal and he kept the loot.

vasco’s voyage Vasco's first voyage to India started in July 1497. He got to India in may 1498 and got back to Portugal 1499. He went with 4 ships 170 men and came back with 2 ships 55 men. The purpose of his voyage was to trade gold for spices.

OLDER ADULT After two trips to India and back, he was married to Catarina de Ataide and had 6 sons and 1 daughter. He enjoyed 20 years of retirement.

Vasco’s Death/Vasco’s Third Voyage After 20 years of retirement, the king of Portugal appointed him to be Viceroy of India. Vasco sailed back to India where he got ill and died on December 24, 1524. His body was moved back to Portugal in 1539 for burial.
