Was Africa Civilized in the 16th Century ? What does CIVILIZED mean? Initial lesson – Explain to the class what the purpose of this piece is – western Europe said they were uncivilized and therefore slave material. Explain final task – where we are going – essay. Click mouse and discuss what civilized means……see next slide.

Is this Civilized ? Discuss the image. what is going on ? Why is this happening ? What does it tell us about being civilized ? Picture taken from encarta 1994.

What about this ? This picture was obtained from the Liverpool Museum service. It is a lynching scene. Class should see the horror of the event and the reaction of the individuals milling past. Discuss what has happened-what are our feelings of the scene? What should a civilized country have in its structure?

Or is this ? Concentration Camp During World War II, German Nazis imprisoned about 7 to 8 million people, mostly European Jews, in 22 concentration camps. By 1945 they had murdered about 6 million of the inmates. Some were killed by firing squads, others died of starvation or as a result of experiments performed on them by German doctors and scientists, and most died in poison gas chambers. When Allied forces liberated the camps in 1945, they found them littered with thousands of unburied dead, and the majority of the survivors were suffering from disease or starvation. Archive Photos "Concentration Camp," Microsoft (R) Encarta. Copyright (c) 1993 Microsoft Corporation. Copyright (c) 1993 Funk & Wagnall's Corporation Photo and caption were taken from Encarta 1994. Useful source to discuss – persecution of a people by a government of a modern country.

We think CIVILIZED means………. Give table groups/pairs 5-10 mins to discuss the word and try to define it ( giving examples ). Pull class together and let them write their lists up on the whiteboard. Do the group lists match ? What is different and what is the same ? This is a 20th century definition….if we used it on England in the 1600’s would it have been civilized?

Was Africa Civilized in the 16th Century? Introduction Civilized means (add eg.s) Facts about African Countries Facts about England in 1600 This slide is to help the groups structure their work ( research has to be done on the various African nations at the time, using info folders, pictures and video ‘Atlantic Slave Trade-prog one’. They should also use prior knowledge of Tudor life from Year 5). Discuss the various parts their essays should contain. Class should research now. Conclusion ( answer )

Introduction Here you need to say that England and Spain ( and others ) thought that Africans were not Civilized, and so were fair game to be made into slaves. You also need to say what you are going to do in your essay – either prove that Africa WAS Civilized or that it was NOT These slides should be discussed once information has been collected – guide them to put their info in the correct paragraphs, lose irrelevant info, highlight links and comparisons, and build an argument that England itself could be considered uncivilized – it depends on what you mean by civilized and where you are coming from.

Civilized means……. Use your lists from the class and group discussions to define to your reader what you mean by civilized. Say that you are going to use the list to examine African nations and also compare them to England at that time. Guide them to use their thoughts on what being civilized is to structure their thoughts in their argument on whether Africa was civilized or not.

Facts about Africa and England Use your research into Africa’s civilizations to support your argument. Only include relevant details – leave out facts that do not help your argument. Try to link this to ….. Use your Year 5 knowledge of Tudor England. Point out any similarities and differences between this civilized country and African ones. Try to encourage use of comparison – was England really civilized ? Did they conveniently ignore the fact that many African countries had great and powerful civilizations ? Did they conveniently forget that we are all human beings ?

Conclusion This is where you answer the question –Was Africa a civilized place in the 1600’s? Remember what you have said in your argument – did you think it was or was not? Try to sum up your argument and evidence in a few lines. Remind them that they should know from the start what their conclusion will be – not discover it on the way

Was Africa Civilized in the 16th Century? Introduction Civilized means (add eg.s) Facts about African Countries Facts about England in 1600 Put this slide up during the lesson that the children are writing their first draft essays. Keep it up as a guide. Give second sets a printed version to keep as reference. Conclusion ( answer )
