Oracle Data Hubs, concept to reality? Atlanta OAUG February 18th, 2005 Bill Dunham EAS Sr. Practice Director

Agenda Brief intro of Allstream Data Hubs General info What are they? What are they not? What do they do? How do they work? Are they new? Getting started; general instructions Wrap-up/Q&A

Who is Allstream? Allstream is a leading communication solutions provider with a world-class portfolio of Connectivity, Infrastructure Management and IT Services. US Offices in Cary, NC and Chicago, IL. Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario Some clients; NATO, JDS Uniphase, Corel, ADP, McGraw-Hill

A little about me… Bill Dunham Sr. Practice Director, US & International Many years of Oracle Technology and Applications Experience Technology start in 1985 Applications start in 1991 Co-authored two Oracle Application books Written and presented many Oracle technology and application white papers Former Oracle employee

Data Hubs Getting started… Data Hubs What are they and where did they come from? A repository for data Needs for legacy application, or non-Oracle application data to integrate with Oracle Applications Remember two-phase commits? Data maintained in multiple applications

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what are they? A central data repository that cleanses and enriches data from a variety of sources

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what are they? A shared resource across Any heterogeneous environment, with or without the Oracle eBusiness suite Many transactional applications Many operational data stores Many data warehouses Examples; third party applications, other ERP products, any transaction that meets the minimal data requirements of the hub

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what are they? Create a single, enterprise view of data A true “master file” for all enterprise applications Other systems interface “real-time” with the hub For the Customer data hub, the TCA is leveraged and at the heart of all transactions

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what are they? There are two pieces to the hub The hub itself Which runs on the latest version of the E-Business suite technology Application Server 10.2.2 Oracle Database Version 9.R2 Integration Server Enables companies to integrate processes

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what are they not? Not a data warehouse data flows bidirectional to and from a hub Data warehouses are typically unidirectional they do not synchronize with their source they do not allow updates of data

Data Hubs Data Hubs, what do they do? Data Synchronization Data Cleansing Data Enriching Increased B-to-B integration Increased application-to-application integration And overall business process integration

Data Hubs Data Hubs, how do they work? PeopleSoft Mainframe Data Hubs Web Applications Data Hubs Oracle Applications Data from any source Data flows bidirectional to and from hub PeopleSoft Mainframe

Data Hubs Data Hubs, are these products new? Concept and some components are Specifically, the Customer Data Hub (1/04) Composed of a component of products Oracle Customers On-line Oracle Data Librarian Oracle Customer Model

Data Hubs Data Hubs, are these products new? New Hubs are offered by Oracle: Product Data Hub – Centralize product information from disparate systems to create a single global catalog as a master for all other systems, departments, customer and suppliers.

Data Hubs Data Hubs, are these products new? New Hubs are offered by Oracle: Financial Consolidation Hub – Integrate and automate currency translation, inter-company eliminations, acquisitions, disposals and more. Financial Services Accounting Data Hub

Data Hubs Data Hubs, are these products new? New Hubs are offered by Oracle: Citizen Data Hub – Allows government agencies to create and manage a comprehensive citizen data repository.

Data Hubs Data Hubs, are these products new? Each has proven themselves as a part of the Oracle E-Business Suite The hubs, are becoming “master data management solutions”, not just “master files”!

Data Hubs Data Hubs, centralize without disruption. Fragmented data, prohibits organizations from seeing complete and accurate picture Hubs will centralize disparate applications/systems into one master Interface real-time

Data Hubs Data Hubs, getting started. Oracle provides bulk import facilities, leveraging data quality tools (CSV, interfaces, APIs, SOAP-based XML web services) Duplicates are managed Quality is verified Data is standardized Source systems cross-references are maintained as data is imported to hub

Data Hubs Data Hubs, improve your data management! Duplicate, inaccurate, and incomplete data costs organizes time and money Conventional approach is to separately clean and enrich data Exchange data, and reconcile to data warehouse Data hubs provide a set of data quality services that are performed centrally, one time, and propagated throughout the enterprise

Data Hubs Data Hubs, synchronization… Services to facilitate hub and spoke integration Hub: Workflow-Based Event System announce activity within the hub Communicates to relevant spoke systems via Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) solution like Oracle Apps Server 10g. Spoke: Standards-based XML web services for creating, updating, and viewing information Data Synch: EAI leverages the data spoke information source to store cross reference mapping between hub and spoke source system

Data Hubs Wrap-up Data hubs are an exciting new addition, they; Allow organizations to create real corporate master files of data Ease synchronization of data across all sources – real time Provide superior data quality services – high quality data management Improve enterprise knowledge of data by consolidation of disparate applications

Q&A Thank you for your time. Bill Dunham bill.dunham@allstream.com 919.460.5335 x204
