Learning Goal Students will solve addition and subtraction word problems.

Objective Students will be able determine the unknown whole number in an equation relating four or more whole numbers. Students will be able to determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. Ask the students what does this mean? Why is this important?

Scale 3- I can, with no help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 2- I can, with limited help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 1- I need a lot of help to determine determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 0- I can’t, even with help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true.

Bell ringer Is the following true or not true? 4 + 4 = 6 + 2 True Not True 15 + 5 = 19 + 3 True Not True 135 + 100 = 205 + 15 True Not True 205 + 30 = 135 + 100 True Not True Make sure you have a discussion with the students. Have them to explain why the answer is true or not true.

H.O.T. to consider during the lesson 1. How can we compare equations to determine if the statement is true or not true?

How to determine if a math statement is true or not true. Lets look at the math statement 45 + 4 = 38 + 11. First I must solve the first equation, 45 + 4 = 38 + 11 then I must solve the second 49 49 equation. Both equations equal the same sum so I know that 45 + 4 = 38 + 11 is a true math statement. Compare equations to determine if the statement is true or not true.

Another example Lets look at the math statement 155 + 23 = 123 + 50. First I must solve the first equation: 155 + 23 = 178 Then I must solve the second equation 123 + 50 = 173 The equations do not have the same sum so this math statement is not true. 155 + 23 = 123 + 50 178 173 Compare equations to determine if the statement is true or not true.

Objective reminder Students will be able determine the unknown whole number in an equation relating four or more whole numbers. Students will be able to determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. Add this point facilitate a discuss as to why we need to be able to tell if equation are true or not true. Turn and Talk: How can this help us in real life?

Kagan Structure- Hand Up, Stand Up, Pair up All student must determine if the following math statements are true or not true. Use drawings and models to help determine your answers. 1. 75 – 15 = 60 + 15 2. 46 - 3 = 29 + 19 Partner A shares their answer for #1 and how they reached that determination. Partner B shares their answer for # 2 and how they reached that determination Compare equations to determine if the statement is true or not true.

You do- Answer the HOTQ and equations in Journal and tell if statement is true or not true. Compare equations to determine if the statement is true or not true. 33 – 10 = 23 + 10 44 + 10 = 50 + 4 96 – 13 = 83 + 8 56 – 23 = 15 + 18

Exit Ticket Turn to shoulder partner and describe how you can tell if an equation is true or not true. Have a discussion about why do we need to be able to tell if equations are true or not true.

Rate yourself in your journal and explain why you are that rating 3- I can, with no help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 2- I can, with limited help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 1- I need a lot of help to determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true. 0- I can’t, even with help, determine if an equation relating four or more whole numbers is true or not true.
