Volcanoes!!

What is a volcano? Volcanoes are formed when sticky rock called magma forces its way through a crack in the earth’s crust. The magma or melted rock that spills out of the crater on the side of the volcano is called lava. Lava destroys everything in its path. It is very, very hot and can flow very quickly!!

Types of Volcanoes Extinct: An extinct volcano has not erupted in the past 100,00 years. This means that it is safe for all people. Dormant: A dormant I like it is sleeping and has not erupted in a long time, but still might in the future. Active: An active volcano is erupting often and could erupt any day. This is the most dangerous type of volcano.

Have you ever heard of any Volcanoes erupting....?

Mount Vesuvius, Italy

Icelandic Volcano!! Had been dormant for 200 years!! The ash rose 6km into the air. The winds blew the ash over Europe causing airplanes to cancel flights

Lava running down the Volcano

Ash exploded high into the sky

Did you hear about the volcano called Mount Etna that exploded on Sunday the 17th of November? Mount Etna is located in Italy on the island of Sicily. It is the highest and most active volcano in Europe. http://www.examine r.com/article/mt- etna-eruption- 2013-volcano- shoots-lava-sky- high-latest-mt- etna-eruption

Have you ever heard of any famous volcanoes?

Can anyone remember what happens when I shake a bottle of fizzy 7up?

Why do volcanoes erupt? The best way to describe what happens when a volcano erupts is to shake a bottle of Coke or 7up. This shaking builds pressure. When you open the bottle , the fizz sprays out. This is what happens when the volcano erupts. The magma builds up in its chimney and mixes with gas formed from the molten rock. This mixture is light and rises to the top. When it reaches the top, it explodes from the cone of the volcano. The pressure causes the volcano to erupt.

Types of Eruptions There are two types of eruptions: Quiet Explosive

Quiet Eruption:

Explosive Eruption:

What do you think is the difference between a quiet and an explosive volcano?

Can you find any volcanoes on the map in front of you? Do you think they are active, dormant or extinct? Why?
