Immanuel: God With Us Part 2 12/25/2011 Isaiah 7:14 Immanuel: God With Us Part 2 Pastor Eric Douma December 25, 2011

This Morning’s Outline: Isaiah’s prophecy necessitated both a near term and far term fulfillment. Isaiah really did speak of a virgin! The virgin birth was necessary for the salvation of God’s people.

The Near Term Fulfillment Isaiah 7:14 (NET) For this reason the Sovereign Master Himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel. Genesis 16:11 The angel of the LORD said to her further, “Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; and you shall call his name Ishmael…

There Must Be A Far Term Fulfillment Isaiah 8:8 Then it will sweep on into Judah, it will overflow and pass through, It will reach even to the neck; And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, O Immanuel. Isaiah 8:10 Devise a plan, but it will be thwarted; State a proposal, but it will not stand, For God is with us.

There Must Be A Far Term Fulfillment Isaiah 9:6-7 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

There Would Be A Virgin Birth! Isaiah 7:14 (NET) For this reason the Sovereign Master Himself will give you a confirming sign. Look, this young woman is about to conceive and will give birth to a son. You, young woman, will name him Immanuel. Which term means virgin? Alma, Bethula

Is a “Bethula” Really Always a Virgin? Genesis 24:16 The girl was very beautiful, a virgin, and no man had had relations with her; and she went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. Joel 1:8 HCSB Grieve like a young woman dressed in sackcloth, ⌊mourning⌋ for the husband of her youth.

How Is Alma Used? Marriageable Woman Both Virgin Isaiah 7:14 (740 B.C.) Matthew 1:23 (4 B.C.)

The Virgin Birth of Christ Matthew 1:18-19 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

The Virgin Birth of Christ Matthew 1:20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

The Virgin Birth of Christ Matthew 1:21-23 “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”  Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”

Lesson 1 The virgin birth is proof that God is always faithful to His promises, and that Jesus is the only way to be saved! If we don’t believe – it is not because we lack evidence!

Why Was The Virgin Birth Necessary? God’s character necessitated it: Psalm 89:14a Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne… 1 Samuel 6:20a Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, “Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God?” Isaiah 13:11a I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity…

Why Was The Virgin Birth Necessary? The human condition necessitated it: Ecclesiastes 7:20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Romans 5:12, 19 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned…For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.

God Gets Around Our Sinful Condition Luke 1:35 The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. All Humanity: “Sinned In Adam” Son of God

The Reasons For The Virgin Birth We needed a new representative: Atonement – Fully God/Fully Human Righteousness – Fully God/Fully Human Hebrews 2:17 Therefore He had to be made like His brothers in every respect, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

Lesson 2 The Savior had to be both fully God and fully man in order for His people to be saved. Not fully man: He could not represent us! Not fully God: He could not pay for us! Jesus commands “Repent and believe the gospel” Mark 1:15
