Plot and Character Development/motives Answer each statement/question.

In Act I, what is the true motivation behind Parris’ concern for his daughter, Betty? He fears that it will ruin his reputation in Salem and jeopardize his job as minister.

Reading books was considered a suspicious activity. In Act I, when Giles Corey asks Reverend Hale about his wife reading books, what does this tell us about reading books in the Puritan community? Reading books was considered a suspicious activity.

In Act I, what actions does Abigail take due to her desire for power? She drank the blood in the woods to kill Goody Proctor. She threatens the girls so they will lie about the witchcraft. Then, she begins accusing others of witchcraft at the end of the act. All of these actions are motivated by her desire to have control and power over these situations and other people.

Why does John Proctor feel guilty in regards to his relationship with Abigail? He seduced her when she was a servant in his house and then abandoned her when Elizabeth fired her.

What is Mrs. Putnam’s motivation for her actions in Acts I and II? Her seven dead children motivate her actions, such as sending Ruth to Tituba to conjure up the dead baby spirits and accusing Rebecca Nurse of witchcraft.

Describe the lives of children within the Puritan community Describe the lives of children within the Puritan community. What were they allowed/not allowed to do? Puritan children were treated like little “adults” instead of children. Their lives were strict, the did not have much time for playing, and they were meant to be seen not heard. Their lives were fairly joyless.

In Act I, what do Putnam and Proctor argue about just as Proctor is about to leave to fetch some wood? They argue about which of them owns the land Proctor is finding wood from. Proctor believes it is his land because he bought it from Francis Nurse, but Putnam states that he was given that land in a will from a relative.

What causes Tituba to admit to practicing witchcraft at the end of Act I? She is afraid that she will be in more trouble if she does not admit it, so she plays along with Hale as he pushes her for information.

Based on their conversation at the beginning of Act II, describe John and Elizabeth’s relationship. Their relationship is cold and awkward. There is a lot of tension.

Why does Proctor forget the commandent forbidding adultery? He feels guilty over commiting adultery.

Why does Proctor believe Abigail is accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft Why does Proctor believe Abigail is accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft? (NOT why Elizabeth thinks Abigail is accusing her.) Proctor believes that Abigail wants to punish him for rejecting her.

What do the following stage directions tell us about Proctor’s character? “[he] is striving against his disgust with HALE and himself for even answering” Proctor is unsure and often in conflict with himself.

When Elizabeth says to Proctor, “The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you,” she means what about Proctor? She believes that Proctor is hard on himself because he has a guilty conscious due to his past affair with Abigail.

When John says to Elizabeth that “an everlasting funeral marches around” her heart, what does he mean? He is stating that Elizabeth is always sad, despite what John to make her happy.
