 Increasing the concentration of a reactant substance will increase the rate of reaction. This is because more collisions will occur, and therefore more.

Experiment 16: Factors Affection Rates of Reactions CHEM 1011 Experiment 16: Factors Affection Rates of Reactions

Objectives To investigate the relationship between reaction rate and the nature of reactants. To measure the rate of reaction as a function of concentration. To demonstrate the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction. To investigate the effect of surface area and the effect of catalyst on the rate of reactions.

Introduction The study of reaction rates is called chemical kinetics. A collision that results in a reaction is called an effective collision. The minimum energy necessary for the reaction to happen is called the activation energy.

Introduction Nature of reactants: Some compounds are more reactive than others.

Introduction Concentration: the rate increases when the concentration of either or both of the reactants is increased.

Introduction Temperature: Increasing the temperature makes the reactants more energetic.

Introduction Catalyst: increases rate of reaction without being used up in the process. Increases rate by lowering the activation energy.
