Feudalism: The Basics

Objective: Given a secondary resource, students will create an illustrated timeline with at least five “boxes” showing the development of feudalism in Europe.

Begin by creating a page in your notebook titled Feudalism then use your text or the computer to write definitions for the following vocabulary words related to feudalism.

VOCABULARY, first Vikings Noble Lord Manor Vassal Knight Serf Fief Feudalism Decentralized Feudal Contract Use the text, pp. 308, 310-311, and 336, as well as the glossary and/or the computers to create a definition for each of the above in your own words. Record your answers in your I.N. under “Feudalism.”

Your task for the following slides is to research how feudalism came to dominate civilization in Europe . You will be using the text to answer questions shown on the following slides. You will write these answers in your I.N. You will then create an illustrated timeline to describe the events you researched. The timeline will count as a project grade. Your timeline needs to include all the elements shown on the following slide: Years that flow chronologically from the earliest date to the most “recent” Illustrations Descriptions Dates for important events or eras

Describe with your group and list in your I. N Describe with your group and list in your I.N. all the elements you see in this illustrated timeline

(The Empire that Survived) This slide is for background research only. No answer or timeline box is needed. (The Empire that Survived) Begin this new section by returning to what you learned about ancient Rome. Turn to pages 176 and 177 in your text to revisit the fall of the Roman Empire. What does the text say about non-Italian values and Germanic tribes?

Answer the following questions in your Interactive Notebook (Check for dates in the reading, you’ll need them for your timeline.)

Question #1 Read to learn about the impact of the Germanic tribes on the Roman Empire. What tribes invaded the Roman Empire. What happened and what effect did the tribes have on the Roman Empire? pp. 176-177

Question #2 The Germanic tribes themselves were somewhat successful but ultimately succumbed to weakness and invasion. What brought an end to the Germanic tribes dominance in Europe? The Kingdom of the Franks pp. 302-303 The Carolingian Empire pp. 306, 307

Question #3 Charlemagne established the Carolingian Empire. Under it, Europe was a mostly peaceable kingdom until it was not. Describe how the Carolingian Empire came to an end. pp. 308-309

Slide #4 “The Development of Feudalism,” Next on your timeline, create a brief description of feudalism. Pay especially close attention to how it was an improvement over the past systems of government. pp. 310-313

For the last entry on your timeline: Question #5 For the last entry on your timeline: Use at least 50 words to summarize and draw what became of Christianity following the end of the fourth century. pp. 304-306
