GYMNASTICS!

Our aim during gymnastics… Is to improve our performance by developing our understanding of skills and techniques: What they are. How to gather data on them. How you break them down. Different ways to learn them. The importance of feedback in learning skills. The stages of learning.

By the end of the block… We will perform an apparatus routine, containing our strongest skills, with control and fluency.

Today we will learn... What skills and techniques are. How to tell easy and complex skills apart. What subroutines are and how we can use them to describe a skill.

What is a skill? A skill describes the purpose of linked sequences of movement. An example of a skill is shooting in basketball.

What is a technique? A technique describes the way a skill is performed. Examples of shooting techniques in basketball are lay-up, set shot, jump shot and slam dunk.

Complete the table below... Activity Skill Techniques Gymnastics Jump Badminton Serve Basketball Pass

How many did you get right? Activity Skill Techniques Gymnastics Jump Star Straddle Pike Badminton Serve High Low Flick Basketball Pass Chest Bounce Javelin

Look at the following skills and decide whether you think they are easy or complex... FORWARD ROLL

Easy or complex? OVERHEAD KICK

Easy or complex? Snowboard Backflip

Easy or complex? Rugby Pass

Easy or complex? Table Tennis Serve

Easy or complex? Volleyball Spike

Why were some easy and some complex? Easy Skill Complex Skills Few subroutines Many subroutines Physically undemanding Physically demanding Little coordination needed Coordination vital Simple order of movements Complicated order of movements Only on movement at a time Many movements at the same time Few judgements to be made Many judgements to be made Easy environment (e.g. good weather conditions, no opposition, safety equipment) Difficult environment (e.g. poor weather conditions, full opposition, no safety equipment)

Closed /Open/ Continuous Skills Closed Skills are performed the same way every time. Open Skills change dependant on the actions of an opponent. Discreet are skills which have a definitive start and end point. Continuous skills have no clear start and end point.

Break a forward roll down into as many subroutines as possible... Stand feet together and hands above head. Bend knees. Place hands flat on the ground. Tuck head in. Push off from feet. Roll on your back keeping feet together. Reach forward to stand upright. Raise hands above head to finish.

By the end of the block… We will perform an apparatus routine, containing our strongest skills, with control and fluency. Before we put together our routine what will we have to do?
