Pilgrims: The group of settlers who founded the Plymouth Colony **Agriculture was more important in the Southern Colonies because the climate was warmer Write a list of words that come to your mind when you hear the term pilgrim Pilgrims: The group of settlers who founded the Plymouth Colony Pilgrims were also known as separatists ** They left England because they wanted to be able to worship in their own way Tobacco profits Chance to own land John Smiths book-

Separatists: In 1608, they decided to move to Holland so they could follow their religion freely. In Holland they had religious freedom but worried their children would not learn English ways They decided to move to North America to live by English Colonists and still follow their own religion These people became known as pilgrims

Compact: A written agreement Mayflower Compact: the agreement the pilgrims signed that created a government for their colony. Self rule: When people rule themselves instead of by a king or queen. They knew they would have to work together in order to survive in the new world

Why did colonists create the mayflower compact **Why did colonists create the mayflower compact? What would happen without it? They would fight with themselves over basic needs and they may resort to violence to settle disputes Competition or lack of cooperation

Core Democratic Values: ideals and beliefs that people in America have in common. It's what our country is based on Common Good: people working together for the benefit of everyone

They began to look for a new place to settle They wanted a place with a safe harbor, fresh water and good soil Most stayed on board but some began to look for a new place Late in December they found an abandoned Native American Settlement On December 26, 1620 they began the Plymouth Colony

In the fall of 1621, the pilgrims gathered in their first harvest They decided to give thanks for their harvest A festival was held for 3 days that included 53 English colonists and 90 Wampanoag men It included feasting What do you think this festival became known as? It became a national holiday in 1863 when president Lincoln declared the last Thursday in November as a day of thanksgiving and praise
