Northwest Regional College Advert and review Unit 22 & 30 Multi-Camera Techniques + Advertisement Production for Television & Unit 7: Understanding the Creative Media Industry Northwest Regional College Advert and review By Eoin Godfrey and Eoin Kenny

Introduction We have been given the task to create a 1 minute and 30 second advertisement for the Northwest Regional College; we plan to produce this promotional advert over a period of 1 week. To prepare for this; we looked at various advertisements for the college, however, they were not up to standards as they used generic music and the classrooms were always empty; this didn’t capture a busy atmosphere. The camera angles used were ok; but they didn’t tell you about what the college had to offer. This led us to look at advertisements made to promote various universities; which were of a high standard. Such as: Trinity College: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8evbCLVepg Queens: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U84asw8V0EM Dublin City University: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijofUDF4Cgc

Our aim Our aim is to engage the viewer and to show what the college is like and what it has to offer; we plan to achieve this by filming in classrooms and the courses that students can take part in. If possible; we will also attempt to conduct interviews with students and/or staff of the college. We will create a virtual tour by taking the camera around the college and showing the viewers each department. College Motto: “Start here, go anywhere” We will also have footage of Derry; which shows the city itself and some of it’s landmarks.

Plans for shooting Equipment List 2 DSLR Cameras Two Tripods Road/Boom Mics Final Cut Pro Editing Software Apple Mac Computers Possible Drone Footage Use Possible Candidate to vlog around the college Use DSLR cameras to shoot around the college classrooms/studios

Budget We have to work out a budget for all the equipment that is needed for shooting this advert; I used a college budget sheet in order to do this, when I worked everything out; the budget came to £120 altogether for the two hours that we plan to film.

Shooting Schedule The day for shooting this advert is the 29th of March; the date of the NWRC open day, I hope this finish this edit on the 6th April, as this was the deadline for the assignment before the Easter holidays.

Message and Content The message for this advert is that everyone is welcome and that there is something for everyone on offer for them to study at the College; the main message is “Start here, go anywhere” which is also the motto that the Northwest Regional College uses. The content that will be used in the advert is a warm, welcoming environment where everyone will fit in and will be able to study.

Style The style of our advert will be a montage of footage showing the different courses that the college has to offer; this will show that the college is open for everyone and is friendly and welcoming.

Relevance to the audience From my research into other NWRC adverts; they were not up to standards as they used generic music and the classrooms were always empty, this made them look boring and didn’t capture the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the college. My advert will attempt to change that by filming in classrooms that are filled with students, I will use more upbeat and fast paced music in order to draw attention to my advert; all of these changes will reflect the college’s motto of “Start here, go anywhere”.

Post Production Reflection When my filming partner and I had finished filming our advert for the Northwest Regional College open day; we noticed that we had done things differently than planned. Rather than filming all of the courses available; we were asked to film only the Health and Social care course in the tower building. We were designated to use two rooms for filming this advert; however, there was not enough activity one of the rooms for us to film. So we ended up filming a majority of the footage in the other room; which was quite busy and had more activities for the visitors to take part in, this choice allowed us to show how lively the Health and Social care course was. Because of this; it allowed my partner and I to capture more footage than we originally intended as it required more than one camera, we didn’t get footage of Derry using a drone or interviews with students as we felt it wasn’t relevant to the advert that we were now producing. My role in this production was cameraman and editor for this project as I have previous experience with both roles; this assignment would help me get a future career as a cameraman or editor, this is because I like to make films and I use some of the required skills in order to do this.

Post Production reflection-Client Relationships The client relationship for this project changed during the production; as we were meant to film an advert for all of the courses in the college, but instead, we ended up filming only the Health and Social care course in the college’s Tower Building. As a result; our new client Kim Boyle asked us to promote Health and Social Care, she wanted us to capture the many elements of the course that was available to the students who wanted to interested and attended this course in the future. The feedback that we received from the client was positive and they were delighted by what they received. I am personally happy with the finished project as we were able to adapt to the new Client brief that was presented to us.
