Presentation transcript:

The American Dream The term "American Dream" was apparently invented in 1931 by historian James Truslow Adams; he was referring to "That dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for every man, with opportunity for each according to his ability or achievement."

The American Dream DEFINITION of 'American Dream' The belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone. The American dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work, not by chance.

The American Dream Is the American Dream unique to Americans or is it a “Human” Dream? Do you believe the American Dream has changed over time?  If so, how? Do all US citizens have equal opportunities to achieve the American Dream?  Explain who does or does not have the same opportunities and why. Is the belief in the American Dream necessary to society?  Why/why not? How do you personally define the American Dream?
