Age-related changes of the composition of the T cell compartment and influence of latent CMV-infection. (A) Schematic representation of changes in the quantitative distribution of naïve (blue), memory (black), and effector (gray) T cells in peripheral blood. (B) Representative FACS data are shown for young and old CMV-negative and CMV-positive donors. Naïve, memory, and effector CD8+ T cells are defined by expression of CD45RA and CD28 and are highlighted in blue, black, or gray respectively. Percentages of the individual subsets are depicted in the upper right corner. With increasing age the percentage of naïve cells decreases, whereas effector T cells accumulate. CMV-seropositivity significantly enhances these changes. Reprinted with modifications from Almanzar G, et al. Long-term cytomegalovirus infection leads to significant changes in the composition of the CD8+ T cell repertoire, which may be the basis for an imbalance in the cytokine production profile in elderly persons J Virol. 2005;79:3675.
