Preparing and mixing materials in the workplace Introduction When mixing materials, it should be done with Health and Safety in mind. It should be carried out in a well ventilated area and with the correct PPE being worn. PPE stands for personal protective equipment and can include: Protective gloves Protective glasses Clothing – jacket / trousers or boiler suits Dust masks in relation to the area you are working in. Barrier creams are also used to protect the skin during the working day

Preparing and mixing materials in the workplace Preparation Before the mixing of any materials can commence, the mixing area must be prepared. Materials should be stored correctly to avoid contamination. A supply of clean water should be readily available. The surrounding areas should be protected to avoid unnecessary damage.

Preparing and mixing materials in the workplace Mixing undercoats When mixing in a plasterers bath or trough the correct amount of water should be poured into the bath and the material added to the water. Using a larry or shovel, pull the material through the water until the material reaches a consistent mix.

Preparing and mixing materials in the workplace Mixing in a bucket or a tub Put the correct amount of water into the container Add the plaster to soak up all the water and allow to settle Mix with a whisk or plunger If required add more plaster to reach a satisfactory consistency Be careful not to over mix the plaster as this will have an adverse effect on the set!
