Overview What is Addiction to Fast Food? What creates addiction to Fast Food? What are the signs of addiction to Fast Food? What’s addicting in Fast Food? 5

First, what is addiction? According to dictionary.com it is: “The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity.” 6

What makes fast food addictive? Cravings Advertisements glamorize fast food, stimulating our sense for the food Convenience Fast, cheap, and easy to get 7

According to Jeremy Laurance: “Binging on foods that are high in fat and sugar may cause changes in the brain that make it hard to say NO.” “By stimulating the brain's natural opioids, large doses of the foods can produce a high that is similar, though less intense, to that produced by heroin and cocaine, they say.” 8

What are the signs of FF addiction? Signs of fast food addiction according to Gigi Starr Craving of sugary or oily foods Feeling of weakness stemming from structural changes in the brain Feeling of euphoria and completion after a fast food meal Habit of eating fast food more than twice a day 9

What’s Addictive in Fast Foods? According to Gigi Starr the following are… Salt, Sugar, Fat high-fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils Casein-“nicotine of fast food” refined and concentrated form created by adding calcium hydrogenphsophate to concentrated milk solids Monosodium Glutamate flavoring agent According to the book: “Nutrition For the Normal Adult”- MSG may also interfere with appetite suppression and cause you to feel hunger even after you've eaten a large amount of food 10
