NC-BSI: Development of Embodied Avatar Kiosk for Rapid Screening and Credibility Assessment Problem Statement/Objectives Determine how we can use a rapid assessment kiosk to quickly screen individuals for deceptive intent and test its effectiveness Identify and develop parameters and any missing technologies necessary for an operational setting Methodology We will use iterative rounds of research-based design and experimentation, leveraging existing technologies and developing ones to create a flexible kiosk framework that works reliably in controlled settings and in the field Benefits to DHS Affordability for 24/7 high-volume security checkpoints Reduction of human fatigue and overload factors in security screening Control of human interviewer confounds (interviewer’s demeanor, gender, race, language) Deliverables and Timelines Q3: 1st gen. kiosk studies, initial kiosk & Avatar parameters Q4: Agent/Avatar framework, baselining Y2: 2nd gen. studies, revised frameworks Y3: Real-time agents, lab studies Y4: 3rd gen. w/ field studies, frameworks Y5: Revised intensive field studies Y6: Final Calibration, tuning, field use

NC-BSI: Development of Embodied Avatar Kiosk for Rapid Screening and Credibility Assessment Elevator speech We intend to research, design, evaluate, iteratively refine, and, to the most effective extent possible, deliver an embodied avatar-based kiosk that can effectively execute rapid screening for deception and intent in a field environment Ongoing/leveraged research Existing academic research streams in human interact deception detection DACA-developed Embodied Avatar CITeR grants funding initial kiosk Development and research Existing research streams in remote biometric sensing and evaluation Costs and Special Equipment Specialized kiosks suitable for delivery and engendering measurable responses HPC and infrastructure for support, analysis, sensing, and delivery Remote biometric sensing equipment Computer vision sensing and analysis Investigators Jay Nunamaker, University of Arizona (nunamaker@cmi.arizona.edu) Judee Burgoon, University of Arizona (jburgoon@cmi.arizona.edu) Mark Patton, University of Arizona (mpatton@email.arizona.edu)
