Standard: Number Sense N5 Integers Gross 3-1 Notes Standard: Number Sense N5 Integers Objective: I will graph integers on a number line and evaluate absolute value expressions

3-1 Integers and absolute values p. 106-108 Integers(3-1): {…-3,-2,-1,0,1,2…} the whole numbers and their opposites Absolute value(3-1): The distance a number is from zero | x |

Steps for graphing numbers on a number line Draw a line and make marks at evenly spaced intervals Label the marks with a scale (go by 1 or 2 or 5 or .5, etc) Put a dot on the line where the selected number belongs (magnify that spot)

Put the following on a number line Gross 3-1 Notes Put the following on a number line {-1, 5, -3, 2} {-8, 0, 10}

Absolute Value | - 4| means… How far is -4 from zero? 4 So |-4|=4 Evaluate | 6 |←How far is 6 from 0? | 6| = 6

Practice Evaluate |-12| - | 5 | |-12| - | 5 | 12 – 5 7 Read : What is the difference between how far -12 is from zero and how far 5 is from zero? Answer: |-12| - | 5 | 12 – 5 7

More examples to discuss… Describe a situation in life where negative integers occur. On a number line graph 2 points that have the same absolute value Which one doesn’t belong | -3| -3 | 3 | 3
