LT Agenda I can choose the best evidence to support the beginnings of answers to the end of unit assessment prompts. Energizer, etc. Best evidence Character Brainstorm  Best evidence Structure Brainstorm  best evidence Symbol

Hullo! Sit at the set of tables for the section of Hotel you’d most like to focus on. 1-25 = through walking home w/ Keiko 26-49 = Henry letting go & bootlegging 50-77 = last night’s reading Please take out your spiral/comp book and have your copy of Hotel out.

Today = all the things Energizer: Homework Today’s learning targets… I can choose the best evidence to support the beginnings of answers to the end of unit assessment prompts. Energizer: What are the criteria for the best evidence to support an argument, thesis and/or analysis? What about worst? Homework Read and annotate pages 78-102 in Hotel.

Best evidence The Prompts Best vs. Worst Select a single pivotal moment in the psychological or moral development of the protagonist of a bildungsroman. Choose a novel or play in which a character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work Your table partner hands you 3 quotes that they say they are thinking about using in their essay. How do you decide that it’s better than the evidence you were thinking about? How do you decide you wouldn’t use those quotes?

character analysis Select a single pivotal moment in the psychological or moral development of the protagonist of a bildungsroman. Find the young Henry parts in your section (12, 17, 19, 22, 26, 45, 50, 67, 72) What single moments are there in your section that demonstrate Henry’s beginning psychological (mind; mental & emotional) state? Where does it start to change? What single moments are there in your section that demonstrate Henry’s beginning moral (right/wrong; good/bad) state? Where does it start to change?

structure analysis Choose a novel or play in which a character must contend with some aspect of the past, either personal or societal. Find the old Henry section in your section (3, 8, 34, 37, 41, 61, 65) What elements of his personal past is he struggling to deal with? What elements of society’s past is he struggling to deal with?

Symbol analysis Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work. Skim through your section. What concrete objects are most obvious, or seem to have a level of importance surrounding them when mentioned? How does Henry describe the object? What is the purpose or function of the object? How does it work in Henry’s mind and memories, in the plot, or the story as a whole?

Please split a piece of paper with your table partner… Front and back Please split a piece of paper with your table partner… On the front… What aspect of Hotel do you understand more deeply now? What helped you understand it better? On the back… What’s something about Hotel you know you need to understand more deeply? #completesentence please

Two minute countdown Pass your F&Bs up to the front, please. Homework reminder: read & annotate pages 78-102 in Hotel Pack up; organize. Say something kind to someone around you; give someone a compliment about their work today. Leave me a note if you need to.
